How is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed?
Before you receive periodontal treatment, you must be diagnosed with the disease. Our dentist will look at your medical history to determine if the disease could have been caused by another factor, such as smoking.
Your mouth will be examined for plaque, tartar, and bleeding. Then, we will examine the pockets below your gumline. If you have deep pockets, that’s a sign you have periodontitis. X-rays are also important in diagnosing periodontitis because they can show bone loss in deep pockets.
How is Periodontal Disease Treated?
A periodontist or dentist can treat periodontal disease. There are a couple of different methods used to treat the concern. If you have an advanced case, you may need surgical treatment, such as flap surgery, soft tissue grafts, bone grafting, or tissue regeneration.
If we catch your periodontal disease early, we can use a non-invasive treatment. Often, we can use scaling, which removes tartar and bacteria from your teeth, gums, and below the gums. We also use root planing, which smooths the root surfaces to prevent additional bacteria buildup.
Antibiotics can be used to treat bacterial infection as well. You may be prescribed a mouth rinse or gel. You can also take oral antibiotics to treat periodontitis. Your specific treatment will vary by the severity of the disease, your health, and other factors.
